
GrassRoots Steering Foundation, Inc. (GRSF), is a 501(c)3, non-profit, volunteer, community advocacy organization located in Harford County, Maryland. In 1997, GRSF was formed as a small group of citizens that grew concerned about negative relations between local police and the African American citizens. Since its inception, officers and volunteers of GRSF have served a vital role in improving relations within the community between the police and citizens. GRSF officers have also contributed to state legislation as a voice against racial profiling and served as lay advocates for fair/equal treatment in the legal/legislative and educational systems.
The mission of GRSF is to assist citizens of the minority and larger communities to live safe and productive lives. GRSF advocates for individuals and educates the public of its social responsibilities in protecting the legal and human rights of its citizens as stated in state/federal law.
Advocacy activities of GRSF include:
- Community lobbying at the state and local government levels.
- Advocating for citizens alleging police brutality/misconduct.
- Assistance in disaster relief.
- Launch of Vote The Power! ™ statewide voter registration campaign
- Representation of minority children in school suspension hearings.
- Filing of formal complaint with U.S. Department of Education against Harford County Board of Education to address excessive suspension of minority students.
